My characters aren't saving on Borderlands

Hello,
I will play for a few hour, exit, the game will say that it has saved all of my progress,
and when I hop back on, my character is no where to be found.
I can hear the sound of my mouse hovering over my game save, but I cant see or select it.
Can anyone help?
